DBE trains 507 teachers in Maths, Science and Technology

In an effort to combat the underperformance of grade 12 learners in Maths and Physical science, The Department of Basic Education has established a Teacher Capacity Building and Support in Maths, Science and Technology programme. Representatives from the DBE made presentations to the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education Tuesday about progress they have made so far with 507 advisers trained across all provinces.

“The training programme was designed to address the underperformance of the 12 districts that were targeted. The department worked closely with Cuban specialists to develop the Science and Maths material,” the portfolio committee heard.

The DBE is able to begin training new subject advisers who will be ready for their roles in the upcoming school year. The department conducted this trainings online due to Covid-19 and mentioned that 507 teachers from all nine provinces were trained; 212 of them went through Maths courses while 164 did Natural Science and 131 Technology classes.
