  • Solution: Use visuals and examples to prompt discussions and provide sentence starters to assist in communication.
  • Challenge: Some students may not be familiar with certain pets.
  • Solution: Show images and videos of various pets to enhance their understanding.

Beginning Activities (4 minutes):

  3. Collect the drawings as they leave.

Assessment and Checks for Understanding:

  • Observational assessment during discussions and group work.
  • Review of pet care needs charts created by groups.
  • Evaluation of exit ticket drawings and written descriptions.

Differentiation Strategies for Diverse Learners:

  • For advanced learners: Encourage them to write a short story about their pet or a pet they would like.
  • For struggling learners: Provide them with templates for their drawings and sentence starters for the exit ticket.
  • Visual aids and hands-on materials (figurines, pictures) will support visual and kinesthetic learners.

Teaching Notes:

  • Reinforce the importance of empathy and responsible pet ownership during discussions.
  • Encourage active participation; consider pairing students so they can support each other.
  • Be mindful of students with allergies or fears of animals when discussing pets.
  • Ensure that all materials are accessible to students with disabilities, such as using large print for worksheets and providing additional assistance in group work.

This lesson plan aims to foster knowledge, responsibility, and an appreciation for animals.
