Grade 1 Life Skills: My Self Lesson Plan

Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to recognize and express their own feelings, identify their likes and dislikes, and appreciate their personal strengths and qualities.

Materials Needed:

  • Mirror (enough for individual or small group use)
  • “All About Me” worksheet including prompts for students to fill out their likes, dislikes, strengths, and a self-portrait
  • Crayons, markers, and drawing paper
  • Storybook that emphasizes individuality and self-acceptance

Lesson Structure:

  1. Introduction: Storytime (15 minutes):
    • Begin with a read-aloud of a selected storybook that emphasizes the themes of individuality and self-acceptance. Choose a story that portrays characters celebrating their unique traits.
    • Discuss the story with the class, focusing on how each character is special in their own way.
  2. Mirror Activity (10 minutes):
    • Give each student or a small group of students a mirror. Ask them to look at their reflections and think about what makes them unique (e.g., hair color, smile, eye color).
    • Encourage students to share one thing they like about themselves. This activity aims to boost self-esteem and help students appreciate their own features.
  3. All About Me Worksheet (20 minutes):
    • Distribute the “All About Me” worksheets. Guide students through filling out different sections, such as their likes, dislikes, what they are good at, and drawing a self-portrait.
    • Assist students as needed, ensuring they understand each section and feel comfortable expressing themselves.
  4. Show and Tell (20 minutes):
    • Invite students to share their worksheets with the class or in small groups. Encourage them to talk about their self-portrait and one thing they wrote on their worksheet.
    • This activity fosters a supportive classroom environment where students learn to appreciate their own and others’ unique qualities.
  5. Reflection and Group Discussion (15 minutes):
    • Conclude with a group discussion about what students learned about themselves and their classmates.
    • Emphasize the importance of being proud of who they are and respecting others’ uniqueness.

Assessment and Feedback:

  • Observe students during activities to assess their engagement and understanding of the lesson’s concepts.
  • Provide positive feedback on their participation and encourage them to continue exploring and appreciating their individuality.
