Previous Learning:
Students have learned basic motor skills and cooperative team games. They have been introduced to basic ball games and have an understanding of following rules and the importance of teamwork.
Anticipated Challenges and Solutions:
– Difficulty dribbling: Have students practise dribbling on the spot before moving.
– Understanding the rules: Use visual aids and demonstrations to clarify game rules.
– Team cooperation: Encourage positive communication and teamwork with group activities.
Beginning Activities (4 minutes):
1. Introduction (2 minutes):
– Greet students and briefly discuss the lesson objectives.
– Quick recap of prior knowledge on motor skills and teamwork.
2. Warm-up (2 minutes):
– Lead a quick warm-up: jogging, stretching, and basic dynamic exercises (jumping jacks, high knees).
Middle Activities (32 minutes):
1. Explanation and Demonstration (8 minutes):
– Explain the basic rules of basketball using visual aids.
– Demonstrate dribbling, passing, and shooting techniques.
2. Skill Practice Stations (24 minutes):
– Divide students into small groups and rotate them through the following stations:
a. Dribbling Station (8 minutes): Students practise dribbling around cones.
b. Passing Station (8 minutes): Students practise chest passes and bounce passes with partners.
c. Shooting Station (8 minutes): Students take turns shooting at the hoop from different distances.
End Activities (4 minutes):
1. Group Activity (2 minutes):
– Organise a short relay race incorporating dribbling and passing.
2. Cool-down and Reflection (2 minutes):
– Lead a cool-down with light stretching.
– Ask students to share one thing they learned or enjoyed about the lesson.
Assessment and Checks for Understanding:
– Observation during skill practice to check proper technique.
– Participation in group activities for teamwork and cooperation.
– Exit ticket questions: “What is one key rule of basketball?” and “Which skill did you find most challenging?”
Differentiation Strategies for Diverse Learners:
– Provide one-on-one support for students struggling with particular skills.
– Use larger and lighter balls for students who find the standard basketball challenging.
– Encourage more advanced students to assist peers or practise additional complex dribbling moves.
Teaching Notes:
– Emphasise safety, particularly when students are dribbling and passing to ensure no one gets hit by the ball.
– Ensure students understand the importance of fair play and respect for teammates and opponents.
– Highlight the health benefits of physical activity and encourage students to enjoy the game.
– Use clear and concise instructions, and be prepared to repeat and re-demonstrate as necessary.
– Be mindful of accessibility for students with disabilities, modifying activities and providing additional resources where needed.
