Grade R Home Language Lesson Plan: Transport
Materials Needed:
– Large picture cards of different modes of transport (car, bus, bicycle, train, airplane)
– A storybook about transport (e.g., “All Aboard” by Rachael Barlow)
– Whiteboard and markers
– Coloured paper and crayons
– Glue and scissors for a collage activity
– A digital projector (if available, to show videos of transport in action)
Learning Objectives:
– Identify and name different modes of transport.
– Describe the purpose of each mode of transport.
– Create a simple collage depicting different modes of transport.
– Develop listening skills through storytime.
Vocabulary:
1. Transport – Something that carries people or goods from one place to another.
2. Car – A vehicle with four wheels that is used for driving on roads.
3. Bus – A large vehicle that carries many passengers along a set route.
4. Bicycle – A two-wheeled vehicle that is powered by pedalling.
5. Airplane – A powered flying vehicle with wings that carries people or cargo in the air.
Previous Learning:
In previous lessons, students have learned about the concept of movement and basic vocabulary related to travel. Students are familiar with words such as “go,” “come,” and “stop,” and have practiced listening to short stories.
Anticipated Challenges and Solutions:
– Challenge: Some students may struggle to identify different modes of transport.
– Solution: Use visual aids (picture cards) and engage in group discussions to help students connect words with images.
– Challenge: Limited fine motor skills may hinder collage-making.
– Solution: Provide pre-cut images for students to glue onto their collages, ensuring all can participate.
Beginning Activities (4 minutes):
– Gather students in a circle and introduce the topic of transport.
– Show the large picture cards of different modes of transport and ask students to name each mode of transport as they see the pictures.
Middle Activities (32 minutes):
1. Storytime (12 minutes): Read the chosen storybook about transport. Ask questions during the reading, like “What do we use to go to the airport?” to engage students.
2. Discussion (10 minutes): After reading, discuss the main modes of transport in the book. Encourage students to share their experiences with different transports (i.e., cars, buses) and where they have used them.
3. Collage Activity (10 minutes): Provide coloured paper, crayons, glue, and scissors. Instruct students to create a collage that includes at least three different modes of transport using the resources. Encourage creativity.
End Activities (4 minutes):
– Have students share their collages with the class, describing what they included and its function.
– As a closing, conduct a quick interactive game where you call out a mode of transport, and students must act it out.
Assessment and Checks for Understanding:
– Observe student participation during discussions.
– Assess collages for creativity and understanding of various modes of transport.
– Use verbal responses during the storytime to check comprehension.
Differentiation Strategies for Diverse Learners:
– For children needing more support, pair them with peers during the collage activity.
– Offer extension activities such as drawing their favourite mode of transport or creating a short song about transport for those who finish early.
Teaching Notes:
This lesson aims to build foundational language skills while increasing student vocabulary and knowledge about transport. Using interactive activities can enhance engagement and retention of new words. Ensure that all materials are accessible, such as providing larger picture cards for visibility and supporting students who need assistance with physical activities.
