Previous Learning:
In previous lessons, students have learned about the importance of rules and routines in the classroom. They have also discussed basic hygiene practices and personal responsibility.
Anticipated Challenges and Solutions:
- Challenge: Students may confuse safety signs.
- Solution: Use simple, clear images and provide multiple examples.
- Challenge: Some students might find it difficult to understand abstract safety concepts.
- Solution: Use concrete examples and role-playing to illustrate points.
Beginning Activities: (4 minutes)
- Introduction: Welcome the students and briefly discuss the importance of safety. Ask questions like, “What does it mean to be safe?” to activate prior knowledge.
- Objective Overview: Explain that today we are going to learn how to keep ourselves safe by recognising important safety signs and understanding safety rules.
Middle Activities: (32 minutes)
- Story Time: (10 minutes)
-
Read the storybook “Safety First” by Anastasia Suen. Discuss the key safety messages in the story.
-
Safety Sign Identification: (10 minutes)
- Show the students various safety signs (e.g., stop, pedestrian crossing, no swimming).
-
Explain each sign and ask students to repeat the meaning.
-
Picture Card Activity: (12 minutes)
- Show picture cards depicting safe and unsafe scenarios (e.g., a child running with scissors vs. a child sitting and using scissors safely).
- Ask students to identify which ones are safe and which are unsafe.
- Discuss why certain behaviours are unsafe.
End Activities: (4 minutes)
- Drawing Activity: (4 minutes)
- Ask students to draw a picture of a safety rule they learned today (e.g., crossing the road at the pedestrian crossing).
-
As they draw, walk around and ask questions to check understanding.
-
Review: Quickly review the key safety signs and rules discussed in the lesson.
Assessment and Checks for Understanding:
- Observation during story reading and discussion.
- Student identification of safety and danger in picture cards.
- Drawings to illustrate understanding of safety rules.
Differentiation Strategies for Diverse Learners:
- Provide additional visual aids or symbols for learners who need extra support.
- Use positive reinforcement and stickers to encourage participation.
- Offer more challenging safety scenarios for advanced learners to identify and explain.
Teaching Notes:
- Emphasise the importance of safety at all times and provide real-life examples for better understanding.
- Use age-appropriate language and keep explanations simple.
- Foster a safe and supportive classroom environment where students feel comfortable sharing their thoughts.
Accessibility Considerations:
- Ensure all images and materials are large enough to be seen by all students.
- Provide written and spoken instructions to accommodate different learning needs.
- Make sure the classroom setup is accessible for all students, including those with physical disabilities.
