CAPS Assessment
The Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) outlines the programme of assessment and monitoring for the Foundation Phase, grades R to 3. In this phase, there will be one Assessment Task (AT) per subject per term, meaning there will be 4 Assessment Tasks per grade. The assessment tasks should be jointly planned and developed by grade-specific teachers and internally monitored to ensure that the desired assessment outcome is achieved. As teachers, it is vital to understand the assessment process to ensure that our learners receive the best education possible. Teachers must plan together for assessment, ensuring that the assessment activities allow learners to demonstrate their understanding of the concepts, content knowledge, and skills.
Life Skills Assessment
The purpose of assessment in Life Skills is to assess the development of concepts, skills, and values in an ongoing and planned way. The assessment forms should be appropriate to the age and development level of the learners, and the design of these tasks should cover the content of the subject and include a variety of activities which will be assessed in an integrated way. It is important to note that each assessment task is not a learning and teaching unit, but it does suggest what teaching and learning activities need to be assessed. In addition, it is essential to note that the Life Skills assessment has its guidelines. The forms of assessment will differ from term to term and grade to grade based on the stages of cognitive and metacognitive development of the learners.
In conclusion, the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) provides a comprehensive guide for teachers to assess learners in the Foundation Phase, grades R to 3. Teachers need to follow the guidelines outlined in the CAPS document to ensure that learners receive the best education possible and that their progress is monitored and reported effectively.
