What isiZulu HL covers in Grades 1–3

isiZulu as Home Language develops listening, speaking, reading and viewing, writing and presenting, and language structures and conventions — with strong early literacy in the language learners know best. Use the CAPS PDF for:

  • recommended time allocation across skills
  • text types and themes suited to each grade
  • assessment weighting and recording expectations

Align weekly plans to the ATP so term evidence matches your school’s retained sequence. Home Language teaching in FP also supports later LoLT transitions: keep oral language rich, and make reading and writing daily, not once-a-week “language lessons”.

A simple weekly planning habit

  1. 1. Open the CAPS skill for the week (listening/speaking, reading, writing, or language structures).
  2. 2. Match it to the ATP week on the DBE hub so your sequence stays current.
  3. 3. Choose texts and oral tasks in isiZulu that learners can reuse across the day — not only in the formal language slot.
  4. 4. Keep one dated sample per learner for the skill you assessed that week.
