Coding and Robotics Grade 1 Sample Lesson

As a new teacher of Grade 1 learners in Coding and Robotics, it is essential to have a well-structured lesson plan to guide your class. In Term 1, Week 7, your topic is the internet and e-communication. The specific aims of the lesson plan include aesthetic and creative skills, cognitive development knowledge, digital and ICT skills, computational thinking skills, understanding of the relationship between people and the environment, awareness of social relationships, and elementary science. The learning objectives of this lesson include the following:

  • Defining the concept of connectivity.
  • Explaining what the internet is and how it works.
  • Differentiating between online and offline.
  • Having the ability to log in to a system or the internet.

To achieve these objectives, you will need to use a variety of resources, such as a policy document, videos, a model of a cell phone, computing devices with an internet connection and pre-loaded games, and pictures of several web browsers.

During the period, which is 60 minutes long, you will lead your learners through several educator activities. In Activity 1, you will divide your learners into groups in different corners and ask them to send messages between learners in the same group. Then, you will request the learners to send a message to a different group and ask them how they would send the same message to a learner in another class, then to a learner in a different school, and to a relative residing in another town. During the activity, you should start a discussion and elicit information on how the activity unfolded or how it would develop, pointing out and emphasizing critical points or contributions related to connectivity and the internet.

In Activity 2, you will provide your learners with models of a cell phone and ask them how they would go about telling their parents about the happenings at the school. Then, you will request the learners to provide a list of what will be needed for the cell phone to reach their parents. As the learners respond to the question, capture the most critical point on connectivity.

In Activity 3, you will introduce the concept of connectivity and the internet to your learners and explain it in simple terms. In Activity 4, you will provide the candidates with pattern-protected gadgets with pre-installed one of their favourite games. You will request the learners to play the game, provide them with a simple pattern to unlock the devices, and allow them to play their favourite game. Then, you will ask the learners to search for other games from their favourite sites and let them play their favourite games online.

In Activity 5, you will introduce the concept of online and offline, explain what a website is, and introduce the learners to different websites and related terminology, including web browsers and various sections and icons on the web browser and URL. You will provide the learners with examples of commonly used web browsers like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Mozilla Firefox. In Activity 6, you will give the learners pictures of the interfaces of several web browsers and request learners to look at the difference and similarities.

Throughout the activities, you should encourage your learners to participate actively and ask questions when they don’t understand something. By following this lesson plan, you will be able to help your Grade 1 learner develop essential skills in digital and ICT, computational thinking, and connectivity, preparing them for the ever-evolving technological world.
