🔗 PREVIOUS LEARNING
What learners should already know:
- Family members and their roles at home
- Basic safety rules for home and school
- How to identify trusted adults
- Basic social manners and greetings
Connection to prior lessons:
- Builds on “My family” topic by extending the concept of helpful people beyond family
- Connects to previous safety lessons by identifying who can help in emergencies
⏰ LESSON STRUCTURE
🚀 BEGINNING (Introduction) – 8 minutes
Hook Activity:
Show a picture of a busy community scene and ask: “Who can you see helping people in this picture?” Let learners point out and identify different helpers they recognize.
Introduction Activities:
- Sing the “People in Our Community” action song with hand movements
- Ask learners to share who helped them get to school today
- Create a class list of people who help us that learners already know
📚 MIDDLE (Main Activities) – 25 minutes
Direct Instruction (8 minutes):
Using picture cards, introduce 6 key community helpers: doctor, nurse, police officer, firefighter, teacher, and traffic officer. For each helper, explain their main job, what they wear, and how they help people. Use simple, clear language and encourage learners to share if they’ve ever met any of these helpers.
Guided Practice (10 minutes):
Play “Community Helper Charades” where the teacher acts out a community helper’s job (e.g., checking someone’s heart like a doctor, directing traffic like a traffic officer) and learners guess who it is. Then discuss as a class what each helper does and when we might need their help.
Independent Practice (7 minutes):
Learners complete a matching worksheet connecting community helpers to their tools/equipment (e.g., stethoscope to doctor, fire hose to firefighter). They then color and label their favorite community helper on the back of the worksheet.
🎯 END (Conclusion) – 7 minutes
Consolidation Activity:
Create a class “Thank You” poster where each learner draws or writes one way to thank community helpers. Display quotes like “Thank you for keeping us safe!” or “Thank you for helping us learn!”
Exit Ticket:
Each learner tells the class one community helper and one way that person helps people. Example: “A nurse helps people feel better when they are sick.”
📊 ASSESSMENT & UNDERSTANDING CHECKS
📝 Formative Assessment
- Observe learner participation during charades game
- Listen to responses during discussions
- Check understanding during picture card presentations
- Monitor worksheet completion and accuracy
📋 Summative Assessment

- Participation in creating thank you poster
- Quality of drawings and explanations on worksheet
✅ Success Criteria
- Learners can name at least 4 community helpers

- Let them be “teachers” helping other learners
♿ For learners with barriers:
- Use clear, simple language and repeat key concepts
- Provide large picture cards and worksheets
- Allow extra time for processing and responding
- Use gestures and visual cues to support understanding
