Lesson Plan Title:
Grade 3 Life Skills Lesson Plan: Our Environment
Materials Needed:
– Chart paper and markers
– Flashcards with images (trees, rivers, animals, pollution, recycling bins, etc.)
– A short video on environmental conservation (optional)
– Worksheets on environmental care (one per student)
– Trash and recycling bins for a sorting activity
– Colouring supplies (crayons, coloured pencils)
Learning Objectives:
– Students will be able to identify different components of the environment.
– Students will understand the importance of keeping the environment clean.
– Students will learn basic actions they can take to protect the environment.
Vocabulary:
1. Environment: Everything around us including living and non-living things.
2. Pollution: Dirtying of the environment with harmful substances.
3. Recycling: Processing used materials to make them reusable.
4. Conservation: Protecting and preserving the environment.
5. Litter: Waste that is thrown in an inappropriate place.
Previous Learning:
Students have previously learnt about communities and how people live and interact within them. This lesson extends to how these interactions impact the environment.
Anticipated Challenges and Solutions:
– Students might find it difficult to differentiate between recyclable and non-recyclable items. Use flashcards and a sorting activity to clarify.
– Keeping students engaged throughout the lesson might be challenging. Incorporate a video and interactive activities to maintain interest.
Beginning Activities (4 minutes):
1. Greeting and settling down.
2. Briefly discuss the learning objectives of the lesson.
3. Ask students what they know about the environment. (Activate prior knowledge.)
Middle Activities (32 minutes):
1. (10 minutes) Direct Instruction:
– Use chart paper and markers to draw and explain different components of the environment (air, water, plants, animals, and people).
– Discuss what pollution is and how it affects the environment.
– Show a short video on environmental conservation.
-
(10 minutes) Guided Practice:
- Use flashcards to show examples of pollution and conservation. Discuss each flashcard with the class.
- Do a sorting activity where students need to classify items into trash, recycling, and reusable categories using real or illustrated items.
-
(12 minutes) Independent Practice:
- Hand out worksheets with activities on environmental care. Activities can include matching items to recycling bins, colouring recyclable materials, and drawing actions we can take to save the environment.
- Move around the classroom to offer support as needed.
End Activities (4 minutes):
1. Quick recap of the day’s lesson. Ask students what they learnt about the environment.
2. Design an exit ticket activity: Students will write or draw one thing they can do to help protect the environment.
3. Collect the exit tickets as students leave.
Assessment and Checks for Understanding:
– Observation during the sorting activity.
– Review students’ worksheets for correct understanding.
– Exit ticket activity to summarise their learning.
Differentiation Strategies for Diverse Learners:
– Provide visual aids (flashcards, video) to support understanding.
– Pair students for the sorting activity to allow peer learning.
– Offer additional help and simplified instructions for students who need more support.
– Provide extension activities such as writing a short paragraph for advanced learners.
Teaching Notes:
– Emphasise the relevance of the lesson by connecting it to students’ everyday lives (e.g., littering in the school premises).
– Encourage active participation and ensure that all students are involved in discussions and activities.
– Be mindful of accessibility needs, ensuring that the video is captioned and worksheets are visually clear.
– Reinforce positive behaviour and efforts to keep the environment clean both in and outside of school.
