Materials Needed:

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
1. Define what it means to care for others.
2. Understand and identify empathetic behaviours.
3. Discuss the importance of caring for family, friends, and community members.
4. Demonstrate caring behaviours through role-play and group discussions.

Vocabulary:
1. Empathy – The ability to understand and share the feelings of another.
2. Compassion – Sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others.

Previous Learning:
Students have previously discussed personal responsibilities and the concept of friendship. They have also learnt about different family structures and the importance of respect within relationships.

Beginning Activities (4 minutes):

2. Warm-up Activity (2 minutes): Ask students to think of a time when someone cared for them and how it made them feel. Share a couple of examples from willing students.

Middle Activities (32 minutes):
1. Direct Instruction (10 minutes):
– Define key terms: Empathy, Compassion, Support, Community, and Well-being.
– Explain the importance of caring for others and how it impacts individuals and society.
– Show a short video clip (2-3 minutes) that demonstrates empathetic behaviour.

  3. Walk around to assist and check for understanding.

  6. Collect worksheets to assess individual understanding.

End Activities (4 minutes):
1. Group Sharing (2 minutes): Allow one or two groups to present their posters and explain their ideas.
2. Exit Ticket (2 minutes): Ask students to write on a sticky note one way they can show care for someone today and place it on the board as they leave.
