Grade 6 Life Skills Lesson Plan: Personal Well-Being

Materials Needed:

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Chart paper and markers
  • Sticky notes
  • Copies of a reflection worksheet
  • Access to videos on personal well-being (if technology is available)
  • Printed articles or handouts on mental and physical health (optional)

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. Define personal well-being and understand its components (physical, emotional, social).
2. Identify personal strategies to improve their own well-being.
3. Discuss the importance of personal well-being in their lives.

Vocabulary:

  1. Well-Being – The state of being comfortable, healthy, or happy.
  2. Mental Health – Our emotional, psychological, and social well-being.
  3. Physical Health – The condition of our body, which is healthy and free from disease.
  4. Emotional Well-Being – Being aware of, and able to express, your feelings in a constructive way.
  5. Social Connections – The relationships and interactions we have with others in our lives.

Previous Learning:

Students previously explored concepts related to health, such as nutrition and exercise, and discussed the effects of lifestyle choices on physical health. This lesson will build upon those ideas and incorporate emotional and social aspects of well-being.

Anticipated Challenges and Solutions:

  • Challenge: Students may find it difficult to articulate their feelings or strategies for self-care.
  • Solution: Use prompts and examples to guide discussions, and encourage sharing in pairs before group discussions to increase comfort.

Beginning Activities: (4 minutes)

  1. Introduction: Briefly explain the concept of personal well-being.
  2. Prior Knowledge Activator: Ask students to think about a time when they felt good about themselves and share this in pairs for a minute.

Middle Activities: (32 minutes)

  1. Direct Instruction (10 minutes):
  2. Explain the components of personal well-being: physical, emotional, and social health.
  3. Use a visual chart or slide to illustrate the three areas.
  4. Group Discussion (12 minutes):
  5. Divide students into groups and assign each group one component of well-being.
  6. Ask them to brainstorm strategies that can enhance that aspect and prepare to present to the class.
  7. Class Presentations (10 minutes):
  8. Each group presents their strategies to the class.
  9. Encourage questions from peers after each presentation.
  10. Reflection (Optional, if time permits, 5 minutes):
  11. Hand out a reflection worksheet for students to complete individually, outlining one strategy they can implement for their personal well-being.

End Activities: (4 minutes)

  1. Share & Conclude: Invite a few students to share their reflection answers with the class.
  2. Exit Ticket: On a sticky note, ask each student to write down one thing they will do this week to improve their personal well-being and post it on a designated board.

Assessment and Checks for Understanding:

  • Monitor group discussions and presentations to assess engagement and comprehension.
  • Collect reflection worksheets to evaluate individual understanding of well-being strategies.
  • Review exit tickets for insights into students’ commitment to applying well-being strategies.

Differentiation Strategies for Diverse Learners:

  • Provide additional support for students who may struggle with the vocabulary by pairing them with a buddy for discussions.
  • Offer extension activities, such as creating a personal well-being plan that includes goals and steps for improvement.

Teaching Notes:

  • Emphasise that personal well-being is important for everyone, and encourage students to consider how they can support each other in their well-being journeys.
  • Include accessibility considerations by ensuring all students can contribute to discussions and find ways to participate in activities suitable for their needs.

This lesson plan aims to foster an understanding of personal well-being among Grade 6 students, equipping them with the tools to enhance their physical, emotional, and social health.
