Your Week Ahead
This week your Grade 8 EMS class digs into one of the most important building blocks in financial literacy, the cash receipts journal and how recording cash coming into a business affects the accounting equation. It is a topic that sits right at the heart of the CAPS Financial Literacy strand, and getting it right now will set learners up for the more complex journals and financial statements they will encounter in Grade 9 and beyond.
The cash receipts journal is where a business records every transaction in which cash is received, whether from cash sales, payments from debtors, or the owner investing money into the business. What makes this week particularly rich is connecting those journal entries back to the accounting equation: Assets = Owner’s Equity + Liabilities. Every time cash comes in, something in the equation shifts, and helping learners see that relationship is the real learning goal for the week.
Coming into this week, learners should have a working understanding of the accounting equation itself, the concept of assets, liabilities, and owner’s equity, and some exposure to source documents such as receipts and cash register rolls. If you notice gaps there, a quick five-minute recap at the start of Day 1 will go a long way before you introduce the journal format.

Day 1: Introduce the cash receipts journal, its format and column headings, and work through examples of recording cash transactions step by step using source documents.
Day 2: Analyse completed cash receipts journal entries to show how each transaction affects the accounting equation, consolidating understanding through guided and independent practice.
