– Learners will demonstrate correct handwashing techniques.
– Learners will understand the importance of brushing their teeth twice a day.

Vocabulary:
1. Hygiene – Keeping clean to stay healthy.
2. Germs – Tiny creatures that can make us sick.
3. Wash – To clean with soap and water.
4. Brush – To clean something using a brush.
5. Care – Looking after yourself and others.

Previous Learning:
Learners have previously discussed different parts of the body and why it is important to keep them clean.

Anticipated Challenges and Solutions:
– Challenge: Some learners may not have experience with regular handwashing or toothbrushing.
Solution: Demonstrate the steps slowly and provide visual aids for repeated practice.

  • Challenge: Short attention spans might make it hard for learners to focus.
Solution: Use engaging and interactive activities to maintain interest.

Beginning Activities: (4 minutes)
1. Greet the learners and gather them in a circle.
2. Show pictures or flashcards of different hygiene activities.
3. Ask the learners if they know what each picture shows and discuss why these activities are important.
4. Introduce the learning objectives: “Today, we are going to learn how to keep ourselves clean and healthy.”

Middle Activities: (32 minutes)
1. Introduction to Germs (5 minutes)
– Explain what germs are and how they can make us sick.
– Show a picture of germs and ask learners if they have seen this before (explain that germs are too small to see without a microscope).

  1. Handwashing Demonstration (10 minutes)
  2. Demonstrate proper handwashing techniques: wet hands, apply soap, scrub for 20 seconds, rinse, and dry.
  3. Sing a handwashing song while demonstrating (e.g., “This is the way we wash our hands” tune).

  4. Hands-on Practice (5 minutes)

  5. Allow each learner to practice handwashing one by one at the toy sink/handwashing station, with guidance.
  6. While waiting, other learners can colour images of handwashing.

  7. Toothbrushing Demonstration (10 minutes)

  8. Show a video or perform a live demonstration on the importance of brushing teeth.
  9. Demonstrate the correct way to brush teeth: small circles on all sides and brushing the tongue.
  10. Use the chart paper to outline the steps and encourage repetition from the learners.

  11. Practice with Toothbrushes (2 minutes)

  12. Provide each learner with a sample toothbrush and show them how to hold and use it.

End Activities: (4 minutes)
1. Gather learners back in the circle.
2. Review the day’s key points and ask learners to show how they wash their hands and brush their teeth.
3. Hand out stickers or stamps for participation and good practice.
4. End with a hygiene-themed song or dance to reinforce the lesson in a fun way.

Assessment and Checks for Understanding:
– Observe learners during handwashing and toothbrushing practice to ensure they understand the techniques.
– Ask questions during the review to gauge comprehension.
– Monitor participation and offer positive reinforcement where needed.

Differentiation Strategies for Diverse Learners:
– For learners who need additional support, provide one-on-one assistance during demonstrations.
– Offer visual aids like charts and videos for visual learners.
– For advanced learners, introduce more detailed information about each hygiene practice.

Teaching Notes:
– Emphasise the importance of hygiene in a positive and engaging manner, avoiding fear tactics about germs.
– Ensure all activities are interactive to keep young learners engaged.
– Consider accessibility needs: Provide steps for shorter learners and speech aids for learners with communication difficulties.

Accessibility Considerations:
– Provide visual aids and step-by-step guides.
– Ensure classroom is accessible for learners with mobility issues.
– Use symbols or sign language if applicable to support learners with hearing impairments.

This lesson plan aims to instil foundational understanding and routine in personal hygiene practices for Grade R learners, fostering lifelong healthy habits.
