Lesson Plan Title:
Grade R Life Skills Lesson Plan: Describing Daily Routines at Home

Materials Needed:
– Storybooks about daily routines
– Picture cards of different daily activities (eating breakfast, brushing teeth, playing, etc.)
– Drawing paper and crayons
– Chart paper and markers
– A whiteboard and markers

Learning Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
1. Identify and describe various daily routines at home.
2. Sequence daily activities in the correct order.
3. Use appropriate vocabulary related to daily routines.
4. Understand the importance of following a daily routine.

Vocabulary:
1. Routine – Something we do regularly, in the same way.
2. Morning – The time of day when we wake up and start our day.
3. Breakfast – The first meal of the day.
4. Bedtime – The time we go to bed to sleep.
5. Brush – To clean something, like brushing teeth.

Previous Learning:
Students have discussed different parts of the day and recognised various times (morning, afternoon, evening). They may have also talked about family members and what they do at home.

Anticipated Challenges and Solutions:
– Some students may have difficulty understanding the sequence of activities. Use picture cards to visually show the order of daily activities.
– English language learners may struggle with vocabulary. Pair them with a buddy who can help explain words in their home language if possible.

Beginning Activities (4 minutes):
1. Greet the students and gather them in a circle.
2. Introduce the topic by showing a picture book about a child’s daily routine.
3. Ask the students to discuss what they do first thing in the morning to engage prior knowledge.

Middle Activities (32 minutes):
1. Story Time (10 minutes):
– Read a storybook that describes a child’s daily routines.
– Pause to ask questions such as “What did the child do after waking up?” to ensure comprehension.

  1. Picture Card Activity (10 minutes):
  2. Show picture cards depicting different daily activities.
  3. Ask students to name the activities and discuss when they do each one.

  4. Drawing Activity (10 minutes):

  5. Distribute drawing paper and crayons.
  6. Instruct students to draw their favourite part of their daily routine.
  7. Allow them to share their drawings with the class and describe their routines.

  8. Routine Sequencing (2 minutes):

  9. On the whiteboard, place the picture cards in sequence, describing a typical day.
  10. Encourage students to help you arrange the cards in the correct order.

End Activities (4 minutes):
1. Recap Routine (2 minutes):
– Summarise the daily routines discussed in class.
– Reinforce the importance of following routines.

  1. Exit Ticket (2 minutes):
  2. Ask students to draw one more picture of a daily routine they haven’t already drawn and tell a friend about it.

Assessment and Checks for Understanding:
– Observing student participation during discussions and activities.
– Evaluating the drawings for accurate representation of daily routines.
– Listening to students sharing their drawings and identifying vocabulary usage.

Differentiation Strategies for Diverse Learners:
– Use visual aids (picture cards) to help visual learners understand and sequence routines.
– Pair students who need extra support with buddies for peer learning.
– Provide simpler drawing tasks or verbal descriptions for students who may struggle with fine motor skills.

Teaching Notes:
– Emphasise routine vocabulary and use repetition to help retention.
– Encourage students to share experiences and respect diverse household routines.
– Use diverse and inclusive picture cards to reflect different home environments.
– Ensure accessibility by providing large print materials or assistive technology if needed.
