- Lesson Plan Title: Discovering Numbers and Counting Through Outdoor Activities: Grade R Mathematics
-
Materials Needed:
- Open outdoor space
- Wooden or cardboard number cut-outs (numbers 1-10)
- Chalk for marking the ground
- Assessment score sheets
- Colour markers
- Learning Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, learners will be able to:- Recognise and identify numbers from 1-10
- Accurately count objects using numbers from 1-10
- Demonstrate improved motor skills through active participation in outdoor games
- Vocabulary:
- Count: To list numbers in sequential order
- Identify: To recognise or name
- Numbers: Signs or symbols representing a particular quantity
- Outdoor: A space outside a building
- Activity: A task or action that is done for a particular purpose
- Previous Learning:
Learners have been introduced to numbers and counting through indoor activities such as games and object counting exercises. -
Anticipated Challenges and Strategies:
- Possible distraction from outdoor stimuli: Keep learners engaged by maintaining a lively pace and an enthusiastic tone throughout the activity.
- Difficulties identifying numbers: Reinforce number recognition through visual aids and repetition within games and exercises.
- Beginning Activities (4 minutes):
- Start with a catchy number song where learners can clap or stomp along, creating a physical connection with numbers from 1 to 10. This activity aims to activate their existing knowledge around numbers.
- Middle Activities (32 minutes):
- Number Recognition: Strategically scatter number cut-outs within the play area. Learners search, find and identify these numbers.
- Counting Activity: Set up various stations with different numbers of items ranging from 1-10. Learners accurately count and match each set to the corresponding number.
- Number Relay Race: Form teams wherein each must put number cut-outs or markers into correct sequential order from 1-10. Celebrate the first team to align their numbers accurately.
- End Activities (4 minutes):
- Cool-down and Review: Conclude the outdoor lesson with a slower-paced number rhyme or song to recap the day’s learning whilst settling down from active play.
- Assessment and Feedback:
- Teachers will closely observe learners’ abilities to identify numbers and count quantities accurately during play.
- Recognising individual improvements or difficulties will inform teacher’s ongoing support and instructions.
- Differentiation Strategies:
- For learners experiencing difficulty, teachers can team them up with peers who have a solid understanding of the concepts. One-on-one counting practice with the teacher may also be valuable.
- More knowledgeable peers can take leadership roles, aiding in the preparation of activity stations or directing their peers during games.
- Teaching Tips:
- Emphasise safety during outdoor play, considering factors like the landscape and weather conditions.
- Frequently reinforce the objectives and rules for each game, underlining what the learners are achieving through play.
- Celebrate learners’ efforts to foster a sense of achievement and to enhance their confidence.
- More importantly, gauge learners’ comfort and readiness for outdoor activities. Be aware that some learners might need additional guidance and encouragement to participate fully.
