If you are a learner, parent, or adult candidate waiting for Grade 12 results — or hunting for older proof of marks — this page is for you. It covers what you can check online through official channels, what you still collect at school, and why “view matric certificate online” usually does not mean a free PDF of the Umalusi certificate.
Results online are not the same as your certificate
When the Department of Basic Education (DBE) releases National Senior Certificate (NSC) results, you can often see subject marks on the official exam-results page. That screen (or an SMS) is not your final Umalusi certificate.
- Statement of Results (SoR): Official temporary document from your assessment body (for most public-school candidates, the DBE). Collect it from the school or exam centre where you wrote. Universities, TVET colleges, and many employers accept it until the certificate is issued.
- Matric / NSC certificate: Issued by Umalusi after re-mark and re-check processes. Bulk certification for November exams traditionally follows later (often into April/May). You collect it from your school or centre — you do not normally download the full certificate from a public “viewer.”
If a website promises “download your matric certificate PDF instantly,” treat it with caution unless it is a government portal you recognise.
How to check recent NSC results (official)
- School or exam centre — Get your Statement of Results. Check names and ID numbers carefully and report errors within the windows on that year’s release notice.
- DBE exam results page — https://www.education.gov.za/matricresults/examresults.aspx
Enter your exam number when the portal is live for that sitting. Which candidates appear online depends on the examination; part-time candidates are often told to use the centre only. - SMS / USSD (results-release periods) — Recent cycles have used SMS to 35658 and USSD *120*35658# (network charges apply). These are campaign tools for results release, not a permanent archive for every year since you left school. Confirm the current number on DBE or provincial notices before you send personal data.
- e-Services for remarks — When open, re-mark or re-check applications go through your school/district or https://www.eservices.gov.za. Fees and closing dates appear on the reverse of your SoR and on the DBE release page for that year.
Example (Class of 2025): outcomes were announced on 12 January 2026; results went to candidates from 13 January 2026, with SoRs at schools/centres and online access from 06:00 on the DBE site. Always use that year’s official notice for deadlines (queries, remarks, June exam registration).
“Old” matric results: what you can realistically do
There is no single public button that reprints every historical certificate as a downloadable file. If you wrote years ago and need proof:
- Ask whether your former school still holds a Statement of Results or can guide you.
- Apply through the DBE or your Provincial Education Department for a statement of results and/or a replacement certificate if the original is lost or damaged. For 1 April 2026 – 31 March 2027, a replacement certificate is listed at R180 and a statement of results at an additional R70 (confirm when you pay — some older pages still show outdated amounts). Records on the system: about four to six weeks for a replacement; a statement can be obtained immediately. Archive records take longer. - National certification: certification@dbe.gov.za, 012 357 4511/3, call centre 0800 202 933.
Full replacement steps (affidavit, combining sittings, Umalusi online) belong in the replacement guide — that is a different job from checking results.
What online access cannot do
- Replace collecting your Statement of Results when DBE says the centre copy is the official one for that release.
- Guarantee that every year and every candidate type stays on the public results form forever.
- Stand in for Umalusi verification when an employer needs authenticity confirmed (that runs through registered verification clients).
- Fix wrong personal details by itself — corrections have their own forms and time limits on Certification Services.
Scams and common mistakes
- Phishing “results” links on WhatsApp that ask for your ID and banking details.
- Paying a middleman for a “same-day certificate PDF” with no link to education.gov.za, gov.za, eservices.gov.za, or umalusi.org.za.
- Treating a screenshot of online marks as your permanent qualification.
- Accessing someone else’s results without authority (POPIA).
- Confusing Bachelor / Diploma / Higher Certificate admission levels with separate certificates. The qualification document is still the NSC/SC certificate (or subject statement) from the official system.
Quick checklist
- Collect the Statement of Results from the school/centre.
- Use only education.gov.za for the national results page.
- Confirm SMS/USSD numbers from an official notice for this release year.
- For old proof or a lost document, use eservices.gov.za Reissue or DBE/PED — not random “matric PDF” sites.
