Start with the hub: ChatGPT for South African Teachers (CAPS) for CAPS-first prompts and five copy-paste workflows. This page answers one question only: can you join OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Teachers plan from a South African school?
Short answer: no. ChatGPT for Teachers is a free workspace for verified US K-12 teachers and school staff through June 2028. It is not a global teacher discount, and it is not available to learners. If you work in a South African school, use ordinary ChatGPT (start on Free) and check every draft against your CAPS file and ATP.
What “ChatGPT for Teachers” actually is
OpenAI launched a product with that name in November 2025. On OpenAI’s own pages it is:
- a school or district workspace, not a personal Plus upgrade with a new label
- free through June 2028 for people who pass verification
- built for teachers, staff and school leaders, not for students
- described as keeping shared classroom material out of default model training, with admin tools such as SSO and role-based access
That is a US school-system product. It is not the same thing as the ChatGPT website you open in a browser after creating a personal account.
OpenAI’s help article is explicit about who qualifies. You are eligible if you:
- work for an accredited US K-12 school or district, and
- are a teacher, staff member, school leader or district administrator
Verification uses SheerID and a school or district email. Workspaces stay inside one district. The plan is not currently for students.
If your email ends in .co.za, or you teach at a public, independent or TVET site in South Africa, you do not meet that test. Do not spend a planning period trying to “get verified”.
What you are not missing (and what you are)
You are missing a managed US workspace: district admin controls, a student-data privacy agreement aimed at US FERPA rules, and in-product prompts written for US grades and standards.
You are not missing a tool that “knows CAPS”. OpenAI does not claim that. CAPS alignment still comes from your prompt and your check against the document, whether you are on Free, Plus, or a school workspace. That is the same rule as on the hub.
Other countries sometimes procure education plans at ministry level. Estonia’s ChatGPT Edu roll-out is a government partnership, not a form you can fill in from Gauteng or the Eastern Cape. Do not treat news about Estonia, or about US districts, as a South African offer.
What to use instead this week
Stay on Free ChatGPT unless you already hit limits every week and would otherwise buy another textbook. Plus is priced in US dollars. The rand cost moves. It will not make the model more accurate about Term 3 topics in your ATP.
Then work the way the hub already describes:
- Put grade, subject, term, topic, language level and constraints in the prompt.
- Ask for print-ready, low-resource outputs. No one-tablet-per-learner default.
- Open the real CAPS file and ATP. Delete invented page numbers and overseas examples.
- Teach with chalkboard, textbook or printouts. Learners do not need ChatGPT accounts.

Do not do this
- Do not paste learner names, ID numbers, photos, mark sheets or behaviour notes into public ChatGPT. Use
[Learner A]. This is practical caution, not POPIA legal advice. Ask your principal or information officer if your school has extra rules. - Do not buy Plus hoping it will invent official outcome codes correctly. It will still invent them if you let it.
- Do not tell colleagues that “ChatGPT is free for teachers now”. That headline is about a US plan.
- Do not put Grade 8-12 learners on unsupervised ChatGPT for SBA or exam practice unless your HOD has agreed the task type. Use the FET integrity page once it is live; until then, treat formal assessment as the learner’s own work.
How to explain this to an SMT in two sentences
“OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Teachers is a US K-12 staff workspace, free there through June 2028. We cannot join it. Staff may use public ChatGPT for prep only, with no learner personal data, and every draft checked against CAPS and the ATP.”
If your school later gets a provincial or district-approved tool, follow that tool’s rules. This page does not replace a circular.
