ChatGPT Prompts for Intermediate Phase Mathematics (CAPS)

Use ChatGPT as a prep aide for Intermediate Phase Mathematics (Grades 4-6), not as a replacement for your CAPS file, ATP or professional judgement. Free ChatGPT is enough for most weekly prep if you write clear prompts and then check the draft.

CAPS123 is a practical aid. It is not an official DBE publication. Always open your Intermediate Phase Mathematics CAPS document and current ATP before you teach or print anything the model drafts. Official documents: DBE CAPS hub.

Start with the hub if you are new to this workflow: ChatGPT for South African Teachers (CAPS). For prompt craft in more detail, see The South African teacher’s guide to writing effective AI prompts.

CAPS-first skeleton for IP Maths

Put this context in every request. Paste your ATP topic name. Do not invent week numbers, page numbers or outcome codes.

Act as an experienced South African Intermediate Phase Mathematics teacher.
Create [output] for Grade [4/5/6] Mathematics, Term [Y], topic "[exact ATP topic wording]".
Content area (choose one from CAPS): [Numbers, Operations and Relationships / Patterns, Functions and Algebra / Space and Shape (Geometry) / Measurement / Data Handling].
Language of learning: [English HL / English FAL / other]. About [N] mixed-ability learners.
Resources: chalkboard, textbook, printed worksheet, low-cost materials. No tablets required.
Use South African examples (Rands, local contexts). Metric units only.
Do not invent CAPS page numbers, official outcome codes or ATP week numbers.
Flag anything I must verify in the CAPS document or ATP.

  1. Numbers, Operations and Relationships
  2. Patterns, Functions and Algebra
  3. Space and Shape (Geometry)
  4. Measurement

Eight copy-paste prompts

Fill the brackets. Generate. Then check against CAPS/ATP and edit before learners see it.

1. Lesson skeleton

Create a 45-minute Intermediate Phase Mathematics lesson outline for Grade [4/5/6], Term [Y], topic "[exact ATP topic]".
Content area: [Numbers, Operations and Relationships / Patterns, Functions and Algebra / Space and Shape (Geometry) / Measurement / Data Handling].
Include: plain-language aims (no CAPS codes or page numbers), prior knowledge check, mental maths starter (5 min), main teaching, guided practice, independent activity, consolidation, and one informal check.
Resources: chalkboard, textbook, one printed worksheet or board work. About [N] learners. Language: [English HL / English FAL].
Use South African examples. Flag anything I must verify in CAPS or the ATP.

2. Mental maths warm-up

Design a 5-8 minute mental maths warm-up for Grade [4/5/6] Mathematics linked to topic "[exact ATP topic]".
Give 8-10 quick items (oral or mini-whiteboard), mixed easy to slightly harder, all on this grade's content.
Include a teacher script and answers.
No calculators. No US money or imperial units. Use Rands where money appears.
Do not invent CAPS codes or page numbers.

3. Worksheet and memo

Design a one-page worksheet for Grade [4/5/6] Mathematics on "[exact ATP topic]" (Term [Y]).
Content area: [choose from the five CAPS content areas].
Include: clear FAL-friendly instructions, 8-12 questions from easy to harder, SA contexts where useful, and a separate memorandum with mark allocation and acceptable methods.
Avoid dollars, yards, miles, snow and US school examples.
State that I must check the topic against my CAPS file and ATP before use.

4. Differentiation (three levels)

Create three versions of the same Grade [4/5/6] Mathematics task on "[exact ATP topic]": Support, Core, Extension.
Same content area and curriculum focus; similar layout so learners are not stigmatised.
Support: worked example, number line or diagram cue, fewer steps.
Core: grade-level CAPS expectation for this topic.
Extension: multi-step application still inside this grade's CAPS content (do not jump to the next grade).
Add brief teacher notes for a class of about [N].

5. Word problems with South African contexts

Write 6 word problems for Grade [4/5/6] Mathematics on "[exact ATP topic]".
Use South African contexts: Rands and cents, spaza or supermarket prices, taxi fare, school sport, township or suburb settings, local place names that feel ordinary (not tourist brochure).
Mix one-step and two-step problems. Include a memo with working.
Language level: [FAL-friendly / grade level].
No US money, no imperial units, no invented CAPS codes.

6. FAL-friendly rewrite of maths language

Rewrite the following Mathematics instructions and word problems for Grade [4/5/6] learners who use English as FAL.
Keep the maths demand the same. Use shorter sentences, consistent terminology, and a tiny glossary of key maths words (English term + plain meaning).
Do not simplify the maths below the grade expectation. Do not invent CAPS codes.
Text to rewrite:
"""
[paste your worksheet instructions or word problems here - no learner names]
"""

7. Error analysis / common misconceptions

Create an error-analysis task for Grade [4/5/6] Mathematics on "[exact ATP topic]".
Invent 4 anonymous learner responses that show common misconceptions for this topic (label them Learner A-D; no real names or personal data).
For each: show the wrong working, name the likely misconception in plain language, give one teaching move to address it, and show a correct method.
Keep examples inside this grade's CAPS content. Flag anything I must verify in CAPS or the ATP.

8. Informal assessment exit ticket

Design a 5-minute exit ticket for Grade [4/5/6] Mathematics after a lesson on "[exact ATP topic]".
Include: 3 short items (recall / simple application / one explain-in-words), a quick mark guide, and what "got it / almost / needs reteach" looks like for tomorrow's starter.
Print-ready. No devices. Language: [FAL-friendly / grade level].
This is informal classroom checking, not a formal SBA task. Do not invent CAPS codes or page numbers.

Do not

  • Do not ask ChatGPT for CAPS page numbers, official outcome codes or ATP week numbers. If it invents them, delete them.
  • Do not accept US units (inches, feet, yards, miles, pounds) or dollars. Use metric units and Rands.
  • Do not paste learner names, ID numbers, photos, mark lists or behaviour notes into ChatGPT. Use [Learner A] if you must describe a pattern of errors.
  • Do not use AI-generated answers as evidence of a learner’s SBA performance. Informal practice drafts are for teaching; recorded formal tasks must be the learner’s own work. See CAPS assessment and, for FET integrity rules, ChatGPT, SBA and the NSC.
