ChatGPT Prompts for Intermediate Phase Natural Sciences and Technology (CAPS)

Use ChatGPT as a prep aide for Intermediate Phase Natural Sciences and Technology (Grades 4-6), not as a replacement for your CAPS file, ATP or professional judgement. Free ChatGPT is enough for most weekly prep if you write clear prompts and then check the draft.

CAPS123 is a practical aid. It is not an official DBE publication. Always open your Intermediate Phase Natural Sciences and Technology CAPS document and current ATP before you teach or print anything the model drafts. Official documents: DBE CAPS hub and the Intermediate Phase CAPS list.

Start with the hub if you are new to this workflow: ChatGPT for South African Teachers (CAPS). For prompt craft in more detail, see The South African teacher’s guide to writing effective AI prompts. Sibling pack: ChatGPT prompts for Intermediate Phase Mathematics (CAPS).

Avoid dollars, yards, miles, snow and US school examples.
State that I must check the topic against my CAPS file and ATP before use.

4. Differentiation (three levels)

Create three versions of the same Grade [4/5/6] Natural Sciences and Technology task on "[exact ATP topic]": Support, Core, Extension.
Same knowledge strand and curriculum focus; similar layout so learners are not stigmatised.
Support: word bank or labelled diagram cue, worked example, fewer steps.
Core: grade-level CAPS expectation for this topic.
Extension: multi-step application or design challenge still inside this grade's CAPS content (do not jump to the next grade or to Senior Phase Natural Sciences).
Add brief teacher notes for a class of about [N].

5. South African context examples

Write 6 short classroom examples or scenarios for Grade [4/5/6] Natural Sciences and Technology on "[exact ATP topic]".
Use ordinary South African contexts: school grounds, spaza shop packaging, taxi or bus travel, township or suburb homes, local weather, recycled materials, water tanks, cooking at home, community gardens.

Text to rewrite:
"""
[paste your worksheet instructions or notes here - no learner names]
"""

7. Misconceptions / error analysis

This is informal classroom checking, not a formal SBA task. Do not invent CAPS codes or page numbers.

Do not

  • Do not ask ChatGPT for CAPS page numbers, official outcome codes or ATP week numbers. If it invents them, delete them.
  • Do not accept US units or dollars. Use metric units and South African contexts.
  • Do not paste learner names, ID numbers, photos, mark lists or behaviour notes into ChatGPT. Use [Learner A] if you must describe a pattern of errors.
  • Do not treat AI drafts as formal SBA evidence. Informal practice is for teaching; recorded formal tasks must be the learner’s own work. See CAPS assessment and, for FET integrity rules, ChatGPT, SBA and the NSC.
  • Do not run unsafe “kitchen chemistry” suggestions without your own risk check. Reject anything that needs open flames, strong acids, or materials your school does not allow.
