Foundation Phase Numeracy: Developing Social Knowledge

Social Knowledge in numeracy involves information that needs to be explicitly taught and remembered. It includes vocabulary such as number names, shape names, and words used to describe operations, as well as social conventions like writing number symbols.

Examples:

  • Number Names: Use flashcards with numbers and their names. Play matching games where children match numbers with their names.
  • Shapes and Objects: Teach the names of different shapes and objects and have children identify them in the classroom or in pictures.
  • Operations Vocabulary: Introduce words like addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication through simple word problems that children can solve using physical objects.

As a teacher, make sure to provide direct instruction for social knowledge and engage children in activities that reinforce this knowledge.
