Status as of 18 September 2026
According to the official portal checked for this guide:
- The main online application period ran 5 August 2026 to 4 September 2026 and is closed.
- The portal home frames this cycle as Grade 1 and Grade 8 2027 applications and placement (the phases table still shows an older “2025” row label; trust the dates and the home wording).
- Document submission on the official calendar ran to 11 September 2026.
- Document verification runs to 18 September 2026.
- Waiting list management runs 18 September to 9 October 2026.
- School placement offers are listed for 15 to 30 October 2026. Parents are advised to accept each offer within 7 days.
- Late applications are listed from 4 December 2026 to 31 January 2027 for schools that still have space.
What to do today: log in on the official system, check your application and document status, keep your phone on for SMS, and watch for placement offers from mid-October. Do not wait for a third-party WhatsApp “guarantee”.

Who uses the online system
The GDE Online Admissions System is for parents and guardians seeking a place at a Gauteng public school for:
- Grade 1 (including children currently in Grade R; there is no automatic progression to Grade 1)
- Grade 8
Applications for other grades are not the same online Grade 1/8 process. Follow the live FAQ and district or school instructions for those grades.
The system is free. Ignore anyone who asks for payment to “secure” a place.

How the application process works (when the window is open)
When a future application window opens, the portal and FAQ describe a five-step flow:
- 1. Register parent or guardian details (new profile each cycle; old logins may not work).
- 2. Register home address details (feeder zones depend on this).
- 3. Register learner details.
- 4. Apply to a maximum of five schools. Use the Home option at least once so you apply to schools whose feeder zones cover your home address.
- 5. Upload or submit supporting documents within 7 days of applying. The home page notes you can upload on the system to one school for other schools to view, or submit to each school. Follow the live instruction for upload or physical submit.
Decentralised walk-in centres help parents apply (hours on the portal have included 08:00 to 16:00 during application periods). You can also apply by cellphone. Use a reliable cell number for SMS.
Because the 5 August to 4 September 2026 window is closed, new main-period applications are not open today. Use login to manage an existing application, then use late applications only when that phase is open on the official calendar.
Documents parents must take seriously
Proof of home address is repeatedly treated as critical for placement. Applications without valid certified proof of home address by the document deadline risk being treated as incomplete.

- Parent South African ID or passport (or applicable refugee, asylum, permanent residence, study or related permit documentation)
- Child birth certificate or passport
- Proof of home address
- Proof of work address where applicable
- Grade 1: clinic card / immunisation report
- Grade 8: most recent Grade 7 report

After you have applied: placement, offers, objections
From the official phases calendar:
- 1. Schools and districts work through waiting lists (18 September to 9 October 2026 on the calendar checked today).
- 2. Placement offers from schools are listed for 15 to 30 October 2026. Offers go by SMS and appear on your parent profile. Accept within 7 days.
- 3. Placement of unplaced learners at alternative schools with space is listed for 2 to 20 November 2026.
- 4. Objections and appeals windows run in November and December 2026 for parents transferred to alternative schools (see phases page for exact end dates).
- 5. Incomplete applications (including missing proof of residence) may be processed later where space remains (23 November to 4 December 2026 on the calendar).
- 6. Late applications: 4 December 2026 to 31 January 2027.
If you get more than one offer, read the live portal message carefully before you accept or decline. Missing the 7-day accept window can cost you a place.
Feeder zones and school choice
Your home address drives which schools appear under feeder-zone / Home options. Enter the address exactly as on your proof of residence. The portal also allows work-address options in some cases; placement rules still depend on official criteria, not on “first come first placed” folklore.
Language of learning and teaching (LOLT) and language subjects matter for Grade 8 especially. Check what each school offers before you rank choices.
