Vocabulary:
- Pet: An animal kept for companionship and enjoyment.
- Vet: A doctor who takes care of animals.
- Shelter: A place where pets can live.
- Food: What pets eat.
- Exercise: Physical activity that pets need to stay healthy.
Previous Learning:
Students have discussed family members and their roles in the household. They have also talked about different kinds of animals during Environmental Studies.
Anticipated Challenges and Solutions:
- Challenge: Some students might be afraid of certain animals.
- Solution: Use pictures and videos instead of live animals.
- Challenge: Limited attention span.
- Solution: Break down the lesson into smaller, engaging activities.
Beginning Activities (4 minutes):
- Introduction (2 minutes): Briefly explain that the lesson will be about pets. Show a picture book with various common pets to pique interest.
- Activate Prior Knowledge (2 minutes): Ask students if they have pets at home or have seen any pets. Let a few students share their experiences.
Middle Activities (32 minutes):
- Direct Instruction (5 minutes):
- Explain what a pet is and introduce different types of pets (dogs, cats, birds, fish, etc.).
- Discuss what pets need to stay happy and healthy (food, shelter, exercise, love).
- Multimedia Presentation (5 minutes):
- Show a short video about taking care of pets. Discuss the video briefly after watching.
- Guided Practice (10 minutes):
- Use toy pets (or pictures) to role-play how to take care of them. Assign different roles to students (feeding, walking, grooming, etc.).
- Independent Practice (10 minutes):
- Provide drawing paper and crayons. Ask students to draw their favourite pet and include what it needs (food bowl, bed, etc.).
- Pair Share (2 minutes):
- Let students turn to a partner and share their drawings and what they have included for pet care.
End Activities (4 minutes):
- Exit Ticket Activity:
- Ask each student to name one thing their favourite pet needs and one thing they love about this pet.
- Collect drawings for a class display.
Assessment and Checks for Understanding:
- Observation during role-play and independent practice.
- Review drawings to ensure understanding.
- Exit ticket responses to assess comprehension.
Differentiation Strategies for Diverse Learners:
- Scaffolding: Provide pre-drawn templates for students who may struggle with drawing. Pair them with a more proficient peer for role-playing activities.
- Extensions: Ask advanced students to write a sentence about their drawing or come up with more than one need for the pet.
Teaching Notes:
- Use positive reinforcement to encourage shy or hesitant students.
- Integrate culturally diverse pets that students might be familiar with.
- Ensure accessibility by providing materials in larger print or audio descriptions of the videos for students with visual impairments.
Accessibility Considerations:
- Use multimedia with subtitles for hearing-impaired students.
- Ensure more physical space for students needing mobility assistance during role-play activities.
This lesson plan incorporates engaging, hands-on activities suited to Grade 1 learners while ensuring alignment with the CAPS curriculum outcomes for Life Skills.
