Materials Needed:

  • Multimedia resources (videos about pets)
  • Whiteboard and markers

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify common household pets.
  2. Understand the basic needs of pets.
  3. Develop a sense of responsibility towards taking care of pets.
  4. Improve vocabulary related to pets.
  5. Illustrate a favourite pet.

Vocabulary:

  1. Pet: An animal kept for companionship and enjoyment.
  2. Vet: A doctor who takes care of animals.
  3. Shelter: A place where pets can live.
  4. Food: What pets eat.
  5. Exercise: Physical activity that pets need to stay healthy.

Previous Learning:

Students have discussed family members and their roles in the household. They have also talked about different kinds of animals during Environmental Studies.

Anticipated Challenges and Solutions:

  • Challenge: Some students might be afraid of certain animals.
  • Solution: Use pictures and videos instead of live animals.
  • Challenge: Limited attention span.
  • Solution: Break down the lesson into smaller, engaging activities.

Beginning Activities (4 minutes):

  1. Introduction (2 minutes): Briefly explain that the lesson will be about pets. Show a picture book with various common pets to pique interest.
  2. Activate Prior Knowledge (2 minutes): Ask students if they have pets at home or have seen any pets. Let a few students share their experiences.

Middle Activities (32 minutes):

  1. Direct Instruction (5 minutes):
  2. Explain what a pet is and introduce different types of pets (dogs, cats, birds, fish, etc.).
  3. Discuss what pets need to stay happy and healthy (food, shelter, exercise, love).
  4. Multimedia Presentation (5 minutes):
  5. Show a short video about taking care of pets. Discuss the video briefly after watching.
  6. Guided Practice (10 minutes):
  7. Use toy pets (or pictures) to role-play how to take care of them. Assign different roles to students (feeding, walking, grooming, etc.).
  8. Independent Practice (10 minutes):
  9. Provide drawing paper and crayons. Ask students to draw their favourite pet and include what it needs (food bowl, bed, etc.).
  10. Pair Share (2 minutes):
  11. Let students turn to a partner and share their drawings and what they have included for pet care.

End Activities (4 minutes):

  1. Exit Ticket Activity:
  2. Ask each student to name one thing their favourite pet needs and one thing they love about this pet.
  3. Collect drawings for a class display.

Assessment and Checks for Understanding:

  • Observation during role-play and independent practice.
  • Review drawings to ensure understanding.
  • Exit ticket responses to assess comprehension.

Differentiation Strategies for Diverse Learners:

  • Scaffolding: Provide pre-drawn templates for students who may struggle with drawing. Pair them with a more proficient peer for role-playing activities.
  • Extensions: Ask advanced students to write a sentence about their drawing or come up with more than one need for the pet.

Teaching Notes:

  • Use positive reinforcement to encourage shy or hesitant students.
  • Integrate culturally diverse pets that students might be familiar with.
  • Ensure accessibility by providing materials in larger print or audio descriptions of the videos for students with visual impairments.

Accessibility Considerations:

  • Use multimedia with subtitles for hearing-impaired students.
  • Ensure more physical space for students needing mobility assistance during role-play activities.

This lesson plan incorporates engaging, hands-on activities suited to Grade 1 learners while ensuring alignment with the CAPS curriculum outcomes for Life Skills.
