Grade 11 Business Studies Term 2 Week 7: Quality Control and Quality Management Systems

Term 2, Week 7

25 May – 31 May 2026

This week’s topic

Production Function: Quality control, quality management systems (SABS), quality control bodies and policies

Your Week Ahead

This week your Grade 11 Business Studies class moves into one of the most practically relevant parts of the Production Function topic: quality control. Learners will explore what quality actually means in a business context, how it is managed systematically, and which bodies and policies exist in South Africa to uphold it. It is a topic that connects classroom theory to the real world in a very direct way, which makes it a great opportunity to get learners genuinely engaged.

In the CAPS curriculum sequence, quality control sits within the broader Production Function unit and builds on what learners have already covered around the production process, productivity, and the factors that affect production. Coming into this week, learners should have a solid understanding of what production involves and why efficiency matters. This week adds another layer by asking: how do businesses make sure that what they produce is actually good enough? That question opens the door to quality management systems, and specifically to the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) and its role in setting and maintaining national quality benchmarks.

Learners at this level sometimes confuse quality control with quality assurance, so it is worth addressing that distinction early. Keep the focus on the SABS, its functions, the quality marks learners will recognise from everyday products, and the policies businesses put in place to meet those standards. Real South African examples work particularly well here. Encourage learners to think about products they use at home that carry a quality mark, and the conversation tends to take off from there.

This Week’s Lesson Plan

Day 1: Introduce quality control within the production function. Define key concepts including quality, quality control, and quality assurance. Discuss why quality matters for business competitiveness and consumer protection.

Day 2: Focus on quality management systems with an in-depth look at the SABS. Cover the role, functions, and importance of the SABS, and explore the different quality marks and standards it issues. Use product examples learners can relate to.

Day 3: Broaden the scope to other quality control bodies operating in South Africa alongside the SABS. Discuss how these bodies work together and how they serve different industries and sectors.

Day 4: Cover quality control policies that businesses implement internally. Consolidate the week’s learning through a structured activity or class discussion, and check understanding through short written responses or a quiz.
