Grade 12 Business Studies Term 1 Week 11: Controlled Test 1 Preparation and Assessment

Your Week Ahead

Week 11 is assessment week for Grade 12 Business Studies. This is the big one for Term 1 as your learners sit Controlled Test 1, a 100-mark paper that draws on at least four of the topics covered since the start of the term. Alongside that, the task component includes a 50-mark case study, giving learners the chance to apply their knowledge to a real-world business scenario. Together, these two pieces form a significant part of the Term 1 Programme of Assessment, so it is worth making sure everything is in order before the week begins.

Coming into this week, learners should have covered a solid body of content across Term 1. Depending on your school’s pacing, this likely includes topics such as business environments, business roles and functions, entrepreneurship, and one or more of the core business studies theory sections. The controlled test is designed to assess breadth, so learners need to be comfortable moving between topics rather than banking on one area to carry them through.

Your role this week shifts from teaching new content to administering and invigilating assessments, giving feedback where appropriate, and making sure your records are up to date. If you have a lesson or two before the test itself, a focused revision session covering common question types and exam technique can make a real difference to how your learners perform. Remind them to read case study questions carefully, look at the mark allocation before they answer, and manage their time across sections.

This Week’s Lesson Plan

The lesson plan for this week is structured around the two assessment components. Depending on your school’s timetable and how your assessment week is organised, a typical four-day flow might look like this.

Day 1: Final revision session covering key concepts, exam technique, and how to approach case study questions effectively.

Day 2: Administer the Case Study Task (50 marks) under controlled conditions.

Day 3: Administer Controlled Test 1 (100 marks) covering at least 4 topics from Term 1.

Day 4: Post-assessment reflection, marking support, and capturing of marks in your record book.

Note that the exact order of the case study task and the controlled test may vary according to your school’s assessment schedule. Adjust the day sequence to match what has been communicated to your department.
