Welcome back from the Term 1 break! Week 1 of Term 2 kicks off with a topic that sits right at the heart of the Grade 12 Business Studies curriculum: business sectors and the environments that shape them. This week your learners will explore the three main business sectors, namely the primary, secondary, and tertiary sectors, and then work through how challenges facing businesses can be classified according to the micro, market, and macro environments.
This topic matters because it gives learners the conceptual framework they need to analyse real businesses in context. When learners understand which sector a business operates in, and which environment a particular challenge belongs to, they are far better equipped to answer the higher-order application and scenario questions that come up in the final exam. Coming into Term 2, learners should already have a solid foundation from Grade 10 and 11 work on the business environment and forms of ownership. Day 1: Introduce the three business sectors (primary, secondary, and tertiary) with definitions, examples, and the role each plays in the South African economy.
Day 2: Deepen understanding of the three sectors through case studies and real-world SA examples, and begin linking sectors to the types of businesses learners encounter in everyday life.
Day 3: Introduce the three business environments (micro, market, and macro) and explain the key features and role-players within each one.
Day 4: Classify business challenges according to the three environments, practise exam-style questions, and consolidate the week’s learning through a structured review activity.
