Your Week Ahead
This week your Grade 6 class moves into one of the most meaningful parts of the Mixtures and Water Resources topic: wetlands. Learners have already been building an understanding of mixtures, clean and dirty water, and how substances dissolve or remain suspended in water. Now they get to see how nature handles all of that, long before humans invented water treatment plants.
Wetlands are fascinating because they do two important jobs at once. They act as natural filters, trapping and breaking down both soluble substances (things dissolved in water) and insoluble substances (things floating or suspended in the water). At the same time, they slow the movement of water across the land, which reduces flooding and keeps rivers flowing more steadily through dry seasons. These are concepts learners can connect directly to what they already know about mixtures and separation, so the prior learning really pays off here.
The research component this week is a great opportunity to bring South Africa’s own natural heritage into your classroom. From the iSimangaliso Wetland Park in KwaZulu-Natal to the Ramsar-listed wetlands of the Western Cape and the Okavango system that feeds into our northern neighbours, there is no shortage of rich, locally relevant content to work with. Learners coming in should have a solid grasp of the difference between soluble and insoluble substances, as well as some familiarity with how mixtures can be separated. If a few learners are shaky on that, a quick class discussion on Day 1 will set everyone up nicely.
This Week’s Lesson Plan
Day 1: Introduce wetlands as natural water filters. Discuss how wetlands remove both soluble and insoluble substances from water and link this to learners’ existing knowledge of mixtures and separation techniques.
Day 2: Explore the role of wetlands in regulating water flow. Use diagrams or images to show how wetlands reduce flooding and maintain water supply. Begin guided research into different wetlands found in South Africa.
Day 3: Learners present or share their research findings on South African wetlands. Consolidate understanding through a class discussion connecting wetland functions to the broader topic of clean water and water resources.
