Your Week Ahead
This is a full and varied week for your Grade 2 learners, and it sits right in the middle of a busy Term 2 number strand. Your class will be working across several connected skills at once, counting forwards and backwards in 1s from any number between 0 and 140, comparing and ordering numbers up to 50, solving addition and subtraction problems in context, practising number bonds to 15, multiplying numbers 1 to 10 by 2, and dividing numbers to 50 by 2, 5 and 10. That is a lot to hold, but these skills all support and reinforce each other when you plan your lessons with that connection in mind.
In the curriculum sequence, this week builds on the counting, grouping and basic operations work your learners have been doing since Term 1. By now they should have a solid feel for numbers to 30 and some exposure to addition and subtraction to 40. This week stretches that range slightly and introduces multiplication by 2 and division by 2, 5 and 10 more formally. Those division concepts are new for many learners at this stage, so it helps to keep linking back to sharing and grouping language they already know from earlier in the year.
Coming into this week, your learners should be comfortable counting in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s, and they should have some familiarity with number bonds to 10. If you notice gaps there during your warm-up activities, a quick number bonds to 10 revision before moving to bonds to 15 will save you time later in the week. Keep your concrete apparatus close, number lines on desks, counters, number grids and base ten blocks will all do real work this week.
This Week’s Lesson Plan
The lesson plan covers all five days and moves learners through the week’s content in a logical sequence, starting with number sense and counting before building into the four operations.
Day 1: Counting forwards and backwards in 1s from any number between 0 and 140, and describing and comparing numbers to 50 using smaller than and greater than language.
Day 2: Ordering numbers from smallest to greatest and solving number problems in context, with a focus on understanding what the problem is asking before choosing an operation.
Day 3: Addition and subtraction to 50 in context, with learners working through practical problems using number lines and counters to support their working.
Day 4: Practising number bonds to 15 and introducing multiplication of numbers 1 to 10 by 2, linking repeated addition to the multiplication concept.
Day 5: Division of numbers to 50 by 2, 5 and 10, using sharing and grouping activities to build understanding, and consolidating the week’s work through a mixed review activity.
