Your Week Ahead

This week your Grade 7 EMS class gets into one of the most practical and real-world topics in the entire CAPS programme: business budgets. Learners will work with the definition of a business budget and unpack the two sides of that budget, income and expenditure. It sounds straightforward, but getting learners to truly understand why a business needs to plan its money before it spends it is where the real teaching happens.

In the curriculum sequence, this builds directly on the financial literacy concepts learners have been developing through Terms 1 and 2. They should be coming in with some familiarity with basic financial terms and the idea that businesses exist to make a profit. This week ties those ideas together in a structured way. A budget is not just a list of numbers. It is a planning tool, and helping learners see it that way sets them up well for the more detailed budget work that follows in later weeks and grades.

With only two lessons this week, you want to keep the focus tight. Day 1 is the place to ground learners in clear definitions and make sure everyone is working with the same understanding of income and expenditure. Day 2 is where you give them a chance to apply that understanding in a simple, structured way. Keep examples relatable. A tuck shop, a small family business, or a school market day works better than abstract corporate examples for this age group.

This Week’s Lesson Plan

Day 1: Introduce the definition of a business budget and establish a clear understanding of income and expenditure through direct teaching, discussion, and guided examples using familiar business contexts.

Day 2: Consolidate understanding of income and expenditure by working through a simple business budget scenario, identifying and categorising items correctly, and discussing why businesses need to budget.
