Grade 8 EMS Term 2 Week 3: Cash Transactions and the Accounting Equation

Term 2, Week 3

27 Apr – 3 May 2026

This week’s topic

Financial Literacy: Accounting Equation – Cash transactions (receipts) and how they affect Assets = Owner’s Equity + Liability

Your Week Ahead

This week your Grade 8 learners move into one of the most foundational concepts in the entire EMS curriculum: the accounting equation. Specifically, you will be focusing on how cash receipts affect the equation Assets = Owner’s Equity + Liability. This is the building block that underpins all the accounting work learners will do right through to Grade 12, so it is well worth taking your time here and making sure everyone genuinely understands what is happening before you move on.

Coming into this week, learners should have some familiarity with basic financial concepts from earlier in the term. They should understand what a business is, what assets and liabilities mean in everyday terms, and have a sense of what owner’s equity represents. If you are finding that some learners are still shaky on those definitions, a quick five-minute recap at the start of Day 1 will go a long way. The accounting equation only makes sense once learners can confidently place an item in the right category.

With only two lessons this week, you will want to keep things focused and concrete. Real-life examples work really well here. Think about a tuck shop owner receiving cash from a sale, or a small business collecting money owed to them. When learners can connect the abstract equation to something they recognise, the concept clicks much faster. By the end of the week, the goal is for learners to look at a cash receipt transaction and confidently explain which elements of the equation change and why the equation still balances.

This Week’s Lesson Plan

Day 1: Introduce the accounting equation (Assets = Owner’s Equity + Liability), define each component using relatable examples, and show learners how a cash receipt transaction is recorded and how it affects the equation.

Day 2: Practise working through a variety of cash receipt transactions, completing accounting equation tables, and checking that the equation balances after each transaction. Consolidate understanding through guided and independent activities.
