The Independent Examinations Board (IEB) has set a new benchmark in academic excellence with an impressive 98.46% overall pass rate in the 2023 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations. This achievement slightly surpasses the previous year’s pass rate of 98.42%, showcasing a consistent trajectory of high academic standards.
The IEB, in its recent statement, highlighted that 88.59% of the learners have secured eligibility for degree study, a slight decrease from 89.32% in 2022. However, there’s a positive shift in the number of students qualifying for diploma studies, increasing from 7.52% in 2022 to 8.31% in 2023. The percentage of learners achieving entry for Higher Certificate level study remains steady at 1.57%.
The 2023 examinations saw 15,180 learners participating, a significant increase from the 13,525 candidates (12,580 full-time and 945 part-time) in 2022. This rise is attributed to the inclusion of 17 new schools, bringing in an additional 960 candidates writing the IEB exams for the first time in 2023.
Confidence Dikgole, Chief Executive Officer of the IEB, expressed satisfaction with the achievements of the class of 2023, especially considering the hurdles they faced, including disruptions from the coronavirus pandemic in their preceding grades. Dikgole also acknowledged the resilience and tenacity of the students amid societal pressures to excel academically.
The CEO emphasized the growing global challenge of maintaining mental wellbeing in the face of societal expectations. He pointed out the significant pressure on young people to achieve top results and secure places in leading tertiary institutions.
