Grade R (Reception Year) is the year before Grade 1 and sits inside the Foundation Phase. The CAPS documents for Grade R tell teachers what to teach and how learning is assessed in Language, Mathematics and Life Skills — usually as separate subject files, not one combined booklet for everything.
This CAPS123 page helps Grade R teachers and parents supporting ECD→formal schooling find the right files and use them with play-based practice. It is not an official DBE publication.

What Grade R CAPS covers
Grade R teaching is organised around three primary subject areas in CAPS:

Why the Grade R CAPS files matter
Clear content and expectations
Each subject file sets out what Grade R learners should experience and work toward. That clarity helps teachers plan across a term without guessing topics, and it keeps Reception Year aligned with the rest of Foundation Phase.
Assessment guidance
CAPS Section 4 (and related assessment notes in the subject file) guides informal observation and any formal requirements for the grade. Grade R assessment should stay age-appropriate — observation, oral responses and practical tasks — while still matching the policy for your subject.
Play-based learning
CAPS for Grade R expects learning through structured and free play, routines and hands-on exploration. Play is not “extra”; it is how young learners meet Language, Mathematics and Life Skills expectations.
Inclusive access

How to use Grade R CAPS this week
- Open the correct subject CAPS file for Grade R (Language, Mathematics or Life Skills) from the DBE CAPS hub.
- Check Section 2 for organisation and time, Section 3 for content, and Section 4 for assessment.
- Align the week with the Foundation Phase ATP for that subject (FP ATPs; how-to: Foundation Phase ATPs).
- Plan play-based activities that match the week’s focus — indoor and outdoor, individual and group.
- Share simple expectations with parents and caregivers so home routines support language, counting play and well-being — without turning homes into formal classrooms.
