What Is the MST Conditional Grant?
The Mathematics, Science, and Technology (MST) Conditional Grant is a Department of Basic Education funding mechanism to improve teaching and learning outcomes in Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Technology subjects across South African schools.
The grant supports schools that have been identified as MST focus schools, providing additional resources, teacher development, and infrastructure for these subjects.
What the Grant Provides
- Laboratory equipment and materials – Science laboratories in focus schools receive equipment, chemicals, and consumables for practical work required by the CAPS curriculum
- Technology resources – Equipment for Technology, Coding and Robotics, CAT, and IT subjects, including computers, robotics kits, and software
- Teacher development – Training programmes for Mathematics, Science, and Technology teachers, including subject-specific content knowledge and pedagogy
- Learner support – Additional tutoring programmes, Saturday classes, and holiday revision programmes for learners in MST subjects

MST Focus Schools
Provincial education departments identify MST focus schools based on criteria including learner enrolment in MST subjects, school performance, and geographic distribution. Focus schools receive dedicated support and are expected to achieve improved results in these subjects.
