How WCED School Admissions Work
The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) manages admissions for public schools in the Western Cape through an online application system. Parents apply for placement in Grade 1, Grade 8, and for transfers into other grades. The process runs annually, with applications typically opening mid-year for the following academic year.
Who Needs to Apply
- Grade 1 learners entering school for the first time
- Grade 8 learners transitioning from primary to high school
- Learners transferring between schools in the Western Cape
- Learners moving to the Western Cape from another province or country
Learners already enrolled at a school that offers the next grade do not need to reapply.
The Application Process
Step 1: Online Application
Applications are submitted through the WCED’s online admissions portal. Parents can apply to up to three schools, listed in order of preference. The system considers proximity to the school, sibling preference, and feeder zone alignment.
Step 2: Document Submission
After submitting an online application, parents must provide supporting documents to their preferred school(s). Required documents typically include:
- Learner’s birth certificate or ID document
- Parent or guardian’s ID document
- Proof of residential address (utility bill, lease agreement, or affidavit)
- Latest school report card (for Grade 8 applicants and transfers)
- Immunisation card (for Grade 1 applicants)
- Transfer card from previous school (if transferring)
Step 3: Placement
The WCED places learners based on available space, proximity, and admission criteria. Parents receive notification of placement via SMS. If a learner is not placed at any of their preferred schools, the WCED will offer an alternative placement at a school with available space in the area.
Important Information
Feeder Zones
Each public school has a designated feeder zone. Learners living within the feeder zone receive priority. Feeder zone information is available on the WCED website and at individual schools.
No-Fee Schools
Schools classified as Quintile 1, 2, or 3 are no-fee schools. Parents do not pay school fees at these schools. Quintile classification is based on the socio-economic profile of the area surrounding the school.
Late Applications
Applications submitted after the closing date are processed only after all on-time applications have been placed. Applying on time significantly improves the chances of placement at a preferred school.
Appeals
Parents who are not satisfied with their child’s placement can appeal to the WCED. Appeals should be submitted in writing with reasons and supporting documentation.

- List three different schools to improve your chances of placement
- Keep documents ready before the application period opens
- Check your application status regularly on the WCED portal
- Respond promptly to any communication from the WCED or schools
