The world is changing at a breakneck pace, and the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are at the forefront of this revolution. For young women in South Africa, the opportunity to be part of this wave of innovation has never been more accessible, thanks to Vodacom’s Code Like A Girl programme. Yet, despite the exciting prospects, female participation in STEM remains disproportionately low. This article aims to inspire young girls, parents, and teachers to embrace the Code Like A Girl initiative as a stepping stone to a brighter future.
The Power of Code Like A Girl
Launched in 2017, Vodacom’s Code Like A Girl has already impacted the lives of over 4,000 girls aged between 14 and 18. By focusing on coding and soft skills development, the programme is designed to nurture a keen interest in STEM careers among young women. This year, the programme is going hybrid, opening doors for more girls across South Africa.
What’s New in 2023?
From 2nd to 6th October, Vodacom is hosting a hybrid coding bootcamp, blending on-site and virtual training. The on-site training will be conducted at 19 Vodacom Schools of Excellence, equipped with laptops and high-speed internet. Simultaneously, the virtual component will run in parallel, making the programme accessible to all eligible young women.
Why You Should Participate in Code Like a Girl
Empowerment and Skill-building
Not only will you acquire valuable coding skills, but you will also develop crucial life skills. In an increasingly digital world, these competencies will serve as your arsenal for the future job market.
Networking and Mentorship
The programme features female mentors already making waves in STEM fields. Their guidance can be a game-changer in shaping your career path.
Breaking Gender Barriers
By joining Code Like A Girl, you become part of a movement challenging the status quo and closing the gender gap in STEM.
A Call to Teachers and Parents
Encouragement and Support
Your role in encouraging girls to step into STEM cannot be overstated. Be the cheerleader, the mentor, and the guide your child or student needs.
Accessibility and Resources
For those not near a Vodacom School of Excellence, the virtual bootcamp is an excellent alternative. Ensure your child or student has access to a computer and stable internet for the training duration.
The Bigger Picture
By supporting participation in this programme, you’re not just helping one girl; you’re contributing to a larger societal shift towards gender equality in STEM.
Conclusion
The Code Like A Girl programme by Vodacom is more than just a coding bootcamp; it’s a launchpad for young women into a world of endless possibilities. Let’s join hands to make sure that this year’s programme leaves an indelible mark on the participants, shaping them into the leaders and innovators of tomorrow.
So, if you’re a young girl dreaming of a career in STEM or a parent or teacher who wants to uplift the next generation, now is the time to act. Don’t let this chance slip away; let’s all #ShowUpForHer and build a digitally inclusive society.
