1. Key Dates The online application for admission to Grade 1 and Grade 8 opens on Thursday, 15 June 2023, at 8:00 AM. It is crucial to remember this date as it marks the beginning of the application period which will end on 14 July 2023. The placement offers will be sent via SMS starting from Monday, 4 September 2023.

2. Creating an Account Before applying, parents must register on the GDE Admissions Portal. To do this, go to www.gdeadmissions.gov.za and click on “Register”. You will need to provide details for both the parent and the learner. The system will guide you through the 5 steps required for an application. Note that you will receive your username and password via SMS, which you should keep safe.

3. Application Process You will need to complete a 5-step process to submit an application: a. Register personal details. b. Register address details. c. Register learner details. d. Apply to a school. e. Upload or submit documents.

Once completed, you will receive an SMS with a reference number and a Thank You message.

4. Required Documents Make sure you have the following documents ready for upload: a. Proof of residence. b. The child’s most recent academic report (for Grade 8).

5. No Access to Computer or Internet? If you do not have access to a computer or internet, you can visit any school, District Office, or the Provincial Head Office for assistance. The Department has also identified community halls and libraries to be used as Admissions Centres. You can find a list of these venues on local newspapers, the GDE Online Admissions Application Portal, and the GDE Website.

6. Updating Your Information If you need to update your phone number after making an application, log in to your account with the username and password created earlier. Click on “My Profile” and then “edit cell phone number” to make the necessary changes.

7. Age Requirements For Grade 1 admissions, your child must be five (5) years old turning six (6) by 30 June 2024. There is no age limit for Grade 8; however, over-aged learners (15 years and older) may be redirected to the relevant institution.

8. Language Preferences When applying for Grade 8, you must select the Language of Learning and Teaching, Home Language, and First Additional Language. The system considers offering placements at schools that offer the languages that the child was studying in Grade 7.

Remember, it’s not a first-come-first-serve basis. Applicants who live closest to the school and in the school feeder zone will be prioritized for placement.
