Grade 2 English FAL: Term 3, Week 7, Healthy Eating (31 Aug – 6 Sep 2026)

Term 3, Week 7

31 Aug – 6 Sep 2026

This week’s topic

Healthy eating: listening and speaking, phonics, shared reading, handwriting and writing built around food and healthy habits, using the vocabulary, songs and skills suggested in the DBE ATP.

Your Week Ahead

This week we move into the Healthy Eating theme, and it’s a lovely one to teach because learners already have so much to say about food. Every child has opinions about what they like to eat, what their granny cooks, and what their mother packs for lunch. That real world connection makes it easier to pull them into English, even if they’re still finding their feet in the language.

In the CAPS sequence for Grade 2 English FAL, Term 3 keeps building oral vocabulary while gradually shifting more weight onto reading and writing. Healthy Eating gives you a natural set of high frequency words such as fruit, vegetables, water, teeth, body, and eat, which learners will meet again in Life Skills and in later FAL themes. It also opens the door to talking about routines and choices, which supports the kind of simple sentence building we want at this stage.

Learners coming into this week should already be comfortable with basic greetings, simple question and answer patterns, and a growing bank of phonics sounds from earlier in the term. They don’t need to know anything about nutrition beforehand. The theme works because it’s familiar, not because it’s new content. Your job this week is mostly language work dressed up in a food theme, not a health lesson.

This Week’s Lesson Plan

Day 1: Introduce the Healthy Eating theme through a listening and speaking activity, using pictures or real food items to build oral vocabulary and get learners talking about their favourite foods.

Day 2: Focus on phonics, working with a target sound linked to theme words, and giving learners practice blending and segmenting through games and short reading tasks.

Day 3: Shared reading of a healthy eating text, with the teacher modelling reading strategies, asking prediction and comprehension questions, and drawing attention to new vocabulary in context.

Day 4: Handwriting practice linked to the theme, forming letters and simple words correctly, followed by a short guided writing activity where learners label or draw healthy foods.

Day 5: Consolidation day, revisiting the week’s vocabulary and sounds through a song or rhyme, and pulling listening, speaking, reading and writing together in one wrap up activity.
