Term 1, Week 11
23 Mar – 29 Mar 2026
This week’s topic
Revision and Assessment: Space and Shape, Patterns, Numbers Operations and Relationships, Measurement, and Data Handling
Your Week Ahead
Week 11 marks the end of Term 1, and this week is all about bringing everything together. Your learners have covered a lot of ground over the past ten weeks, from counting and basic operations to sorting shapes, creating patterns, comparing lengths and masses, and reading simple graphs. This is the week where all of that learning gets a chance to shine in a formal assessment setting.
The Term 1 formal assessment task covers all five content areas of the CAPS Numeracy curriculum: Space and Shape, Patterns, Numbers Operations and Relationships, Measurement, and Data Handling. It is important to keep that breadth in mind as you prepare your learners. No single strand should feel like a surprise. If you have been following the ATP, your class has touched on every one of these topics, and revision this week is simply about helping them feel confident and ready.
Coming into this week, learners should be comfortable counting objects up to at least 20, identifying basic 2D shapes, copying and extending simple patterns, using language like heavier, lighter, longer, and shorter, and answering questions about picture graphs. If there are any gaps, use the first day or two for targeted revision before the formal task.
What Teachers Are Searching For
- DBE Workbooks for revision support: Many teachers look for the DBE Workbooks Term 1 and 2 materials to use as revision resources in the lead-up to assessment. The workbooks are a great source of practice activities across all five content areas and are already familiar to learners, which reduces anxiety before a formal task.
- What to include in a Grade 1 Term 1 formal assessment: The CAPS guidelines are clear that the formal assessment task must cover all content areas taught in Term 1. Teachers often want a checklist to make sure nothing has been left out. Space and Shape, Patterns, Numbers Operations and Relationships, Measurement, and Data Handling should all appear in your task.
- How to manage assessment with Grade 1 learners: Formal assessment with young learners looks different from upper grades. Many teachers search for practical tips on reading questions aloud, using concrete objects during tasks, and keeping the session calm and manageable for five and six year olds.
This Week’s Lesson Plan
Because the lesson plan days for this week are structured around revision and the formal assessment task, here is a suggested framework to guide your week. Adjust the timing to suit your class and your school’s assessment schedule.
Day 1: Whole-class revision of Numbers Operations and Relationships and Patterns. Use DBE Workbook activities and concrete apparatus to revisit counting, number bonds, and pattern sequences.
Day 2: Revision of Space and Shape and Measurement. Revisit 2D shapes with sorting activities and use classroom objects to compare length and mass using informal units.
Day 3: Revision of Data Handling and mixed practice across all five content areas. Use a simple picture graph activity and work through any areas where learners still feel uncertain.
Day 4: Term 1 formal assessment task. Read questions aloud as needed. Allow learners to use concrete objects where appropriate. Keep the session calm, structured, and encouraging.
Day 5: Post-assessment reflection and catch-up. Mark tasks together where possible, address common errors as a class, and celebrate the effort your learners have put in this term.
