Matric Upgrade and Rewrite: Official Options (How to Find Registered Paths)

If you want to improve or complete matric, you are looking for official examination and support pathways — not a sales list of private colleges. This page explains the main Department of Basic Education (DBE) routes and how to verify any private provider yourself.

Official pathways

1. NSC May/June examination (second opportunity)

The May/June NSC sitting replaced the old February/March supplementary exams for candidates who need to improve or complete subjects under the conditions published for that cycle.

• Entry closing dates and rules appear on the Release of NSC Exams Results page and on your Statement of Results for that year (for example, Class of 2025 materials cited a June 2026 entry closing date — cycle-specific; confirm live).

2. Full-time repeater (younger than 21)

If you are still under 21, you may repeat as a full-time candidate at a school (seven subjects including Life Orientation, with School-Based Assessment), subject to school and provincial admission rules.

3. Part-time repeater at a Public Adult Education Centre

Out-of-school candidates can repeat part-time through a Public Adult Education Centre. Ask your district office which centres accept registrations for the sitting you need.

4. Senior Certificate (amended)

Adults / out-of-school candidates (typically 21+ with the prior learning listed on DBE pages) can register for the Senior Certificate (amended):

• SC Registration
• Senior Certificate hub
• Register at a Provincial Education Department office or via eservices.gov.za

Registration windows are published per sitting (for example, a 2026 SC window of 1 October 2025 – 6 February 2026 appeared on SC Registration — treat as historical for that exam and confirm for later years).

5. Second Chance Matric Support Programme

DBE’s Second Chance programme offers support materials and multimedia for learners who did not meet NSC or SC (amended) requirements. Use it for programme purpose and current materials. Face-to-face venue schedules on that hub have included older date text in places — confirm current venues and dates on the live Second Chance pages before you travel.

6. Public TVET / FET colleges (high level)

Release and Second Opportunity notices refer candidates to the public TVET/FET college system (dozens of public colleges and hundreds of campuses nationally) for vocational routes. Contact a public college or DHET channels for programme entry — this page does not list every campus.

After more than one sitting

Credits from multiple sittings are not always combined automatically. Apply for a replacement certificate change of status through Certification Services when you qualify — see matric certificate replacement.

If you use a private provider — verify first

Private colleges are not automatically “DBE registered” for your sitting. Before you pay:

1. 1. Registration path: Confirm how you will enter the exam — PED / district / school / eservices.gov.za — and get that in writing.
2. 2. Umalusi accreditation: For private FET/AET providers and independent schools offering GFETQSF qualifications, start at Umalusi accreditation. Use the live search or enquiry tools on umalusi.org.za (older third-party enquiry URLs have broken). If stuck: accreditation@umalusi.org.za, +27 12 349 1510.
3. 3. DHET registration where it applies to private colleges.
4. 4. Exam centre: Ask the assessment body or PED which centres accept private/part-time candidates for your sitting.

Do not rely on an unverified web directory of brand names.
