Grade R lesson plans: Term 4 Week 4 (26 to 30 Oct 2026)

For Grade R teachers planning the week of Monday 26 to Friday 30 October 2026 (Term 4 Week 4).

This week we will be continuing the DBE Grade R theme “This is where people live”. Learners talk about types of homes, rooms in a home and the buildings in their community, count buildings, windows and bricks, build block houses that are the same on both sides, and solve simple subtraction story sums with counters. The phonics focus in the DBE plan is the letter d.

Remember to stick a picture of a different home on each learner’s locker before Monday, have Poster 17 and the Big Book story “Who lives here?” ready, and ask learners to find out their home address before Thursday. Be sensitive when talking about homes, as some learners live in one-roomed homes.

Where this week fits

  • Term 4 runs from 6 October to 9 December 2026, so this is the fourth week of the term. There are no public holidays this week.
  • This is the second week of the two-week theme “This is where people live” (Weeks 33 and 34 in the DBE Grade R Lesson Plans and Assessment book).

Grade R Mathematics

Counting buildings, windows, bricks and tiles, symmetrical block houses, putting the steps of building a house in order, subtraction story sums with 10 counters, sorting locks, and comparing distances to school on a map of the area.

Grade R Life Skills

Types of homes, rooms in a home, buildings in our community, saying our address, homes long ago and home safety, with the song “This is the way we build our house”, box houses, stained glass windows, a neighbourhood walk and builder role play.

DBE does not publish a Grade R ATP. These Grade R plans follow the DBE Grade R Resource Kit Lesson Plans and Assessment book, which is the DBE’s own Grade R planning document. It dates from 2013, so if your province has its own Grade R programme, follow that and use these plans for ideas.

Pacing note

Grade R pacing is flexible. If your class needs more time on this theme, repeat the activities you enjoyed most and carry them into next week.

Other Foundation Phase grades this week: Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3
