Grade R lesson plans: Term 4 Week 5 (2 to 6 Nov 2026)

For Grade R teachers planning the week of Monday 2 to Friday 6 November 2026 (Term 4 Week 5).

This week we will be working on the DBE Grade R workbook theme Wild Animals. Learners talk about wild animals and where they live, count animals and write the number, compare biggest and smallest, make butterflies that are the same on both sides, match numbers 2 to 9 to dots, and talk about feeling safe and what to do if they get lost.

Remember to set up a theme table with toy animals or pictures of wild animals before Monday, have the DBE Grade R Workbook Book 4 ready (Wild Animals, pages 22 to 33), and prepare paint and folded paper for Thursday’s butterflies. Be sensitive when talking about getting lost, as some learners may find it upsetting.

Where this week fits

  • Term 4 runs from 6 October to 9 December 2026, so this is the fifth week of the term. There are no public holidays this week.
  • The DBE Grade R Workbook Book 4 places the Wild Animals theme in the Term 4 Weeks 1 to 5 block, so this week uses its worksheets.

Grade R Mathematics

Counting wild animals and writing the number, biggest and smallest, counting sets and finding the smallest, symmetry with butterflies, and matching numbers 2 to 9 to dots and sticks.

Grade R Life Skills

Wild animals and where they live, feeling safe and what to do if you get lost, butterfly prints, animal songs and a movement game, and a story about a lost baby elephant.

DBE does not publish a Grade R ATP, and the DBE Grade R Lesson Plans and Assessment book on the DBE website stops at Weeks 33 and 34. This week’s Grade R plans follow the DBE Grade R Workbook Book 4 (2026). The workbook gives worksheets rather than daily lessons, so the daily activities are suggestions built around those worksheets. If your province has its own Grade R programme, follow that and use these plans for ideas.

Pacing note

Grade R pacing is flexible. If your class needs more time on this theme, repeat the activities you enjoyed most and carry them into next week.

Other Foundation Phase grades this week: Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3
